The Simpson Desert is a land of many forms and is certainly not to be thought of as a sandy waste land. It can be a dry hot place, but also very cold and wet. Its heavily vegetated in parts whilst bare in others.

Crossing a Salt Pan

Crossing the Simpson during a dry period can be a blessing, with the many salt pans being dry and hard packed. However it doesn’t take much rain for these flat depressions to fill up and become a lake, turning the track into a boggy impassible swamp.

The Road through a Salt Pan

The crossing via the various lines are long and straight and remind me of a roller coaster, as you conquer the many sand dunes.

Crossing the Simpson

The Simpson Desert is is held together by the many grasses and other plants that scatter the landscape. Spinifex and Sandhill canegrass act like glue and hold the dunes together. Often providingng homes to native animals its a key part of keeping the desert alive.
