Simpson Trip Day 5-6

After leaving the Cadelga Ruins we headed to Birsdville via the Birdsville Development Road. It was still another hour or so from the junction where the photo was taken. However 100k’s on these roads goes very quickly as its mostly straight and no traffic.

Road to Birdsville

Arriving in Birdsville we first came to the race course where the Birdsville Races would have been a few days earlier.

It was only a short drive into town where we were able to refuel and find the local camp ground.

Birdsville Caravan Park

The Birdsville Caravan park offered a range of accommodation options all of which is a short walk from the Birdsville Hotel. We quickly set up our camp and enjoyed a short walk around the town whilst the sun was setting. A quick hot shower followed by a few drinks and dinner at the Birdsville Hotel.

The Birdsville Hotel is one of Australia’s most remote outback pub’s and is certainly worth stopping in for a drink. Many hats adorn the ceiling representing those who have done the “Hard Yards” in Birdsville and have since passed away. There is also a lot of other bits and pieces that gives the pub its charm.

The next morning after breaking camp we just had to visit the Birdsville Bakery. You can’t go past a good bakery for some good breakfast and fresh coffee. They have a good arrangement of pies here too, try the curried camel pie if you dare.

The bakery has a lot of old photos on the walls that are well worth look at.

Birdsville Bakery

Picked up some last minute supplies in Birdsville as it was our last opportunity before The Simpson Desert. There was a hardware shop just behind the bakery, prices were a little more expensive but reasonable, out here you don’t have much choice.

Once kitted up we headed towards the desert, all very excited that we would soon be seeing big red.
